Daylighting Reduces Energy Consumption

Insulating Windows and Skylights with Nansulate®

What is Daylighting?

“Daylighting” is the use of direct, diffused or reflected sunlight to provide lighting for building interiors. Allowing more daylight into classrooms and workspaces is a proven renewable energy technology that saves money, increases worker health and productivity.

By adding a Daylighting System to your building, you can introduce natural light to the work area while significantly reducing power use. In fact, incorporating Daylighting reduces traditional lighting and HVAC costs while improving the building environment.

Nansulate® Allows Daylighting Without Sacrificing Heat Loss

Nansulate over daylighting windows allows in diffused light, while also insulating windows and skylights against heat transfer. Well designed daylighting allows in natural light that balances overhead electric lighting while curtailing glare. Too much light causes glare, which encourages people to close blinds and rely on electric lighting. Good daylighting allows in diffused light and uses techniquies that block direct sunlight, greatly reducing glare.

While images cannot be clearly seen through a window or skylight coated with Nansulate, diffuse daylight does pass through, without sacrificing good passive solar building thermal performance. Nansulate Translucent GP insulation coating can be used effectively on many vertical walls, or on a sawtooth roof, to provide low-cost natural daylight with reduced heat transfer over window glass.

Nansulate® Benefits

* High light transmission - allows through 92% of visible light (as tested on pane glass)

* Low thermal conductivity – ISO testing result 34.8% reduced thermal flow

* U/V resistant - increase longevity

* Resistant to mold and mildew growth

* Exceptional thermal insulation performance and reduced solar heat gain

*Use in designing for LEED certification points

* Allows more capability to optimize building aesthetics

* Reduced building energy consumption and emissions

Case Study

Daylighting for Industrial Energy Savings

Cornwell Quality Tools

Application description: The product used was Nansulate Translucent GP. The application was done on windows where maintaining at least diffuse illumination from sunlight was a requirement along with thermal insulation. (Daylighting with thermal resistance)

"Sirs, We at Cornwell Tools have been very pleased with the results of using the Nansulate material as can be seen by the attached emails...

It's hard to quantify how much has been saved, but management has indicated over this winter so far we have saved approximately $30,000 in total heating costs. Many factors are involved in this, as other changes were also made (in addition to using Nansulate) such as moving the use of the overhead door in the steel room to the smaller overhead door in the inspection area, and adding a plastic screen at that door. However I believe that a considerable savings has been realized.

The cost of the (Nansulate) materials was probably saved in the first cold month."
