Nansulate® Tip of the Day - Insulating Skylights with Nansulate® Increases Energy Efficiency and Reduces Glare

| No TrackBacks
Skylights are a stylish way to add more natural light and ventilation to your home or commercial building while cutting down the use of electric lighting. However, a drawback is that windows are typically a weak point in a building's thermal envelope, allowing significant heat loss and gain, potentially increasing costs for heating and cooling. Another consideration is that skylights can allow through glare, which causes people to draw the blinds, and again turn on those electric lights. As with any architectural element of a building or home there many pros and cons that one has to consider carefully. But now help is shining through for those that love skylights and also want to reduce costs and increase energy efficiency.

Skylights can be easily insulated with Nansulate® Translucent GP coating. Nansulate® will give the windows a slightly frosted look while still allowing through diffused light. Well designed daylighting allows in natural light that balances overhead electric lighting needs while curtailing glare. Nansulate® allows 92% visible light transmittance and provides the opportunity to daylight without sacrificing building thermal performance. Of course the biggest benefit is that the coating has been proven to reduce 34.8% of heat transfer in laboratory testing (ISO 8990:1999), which means that skylights will now be an energy efficient addition. On top of that lovely feature, our Nansulate® product line is also resistant to mold and moisture.

Nansulate® coatings were used on the skylights at the Frost Art Museum in Miami, FL. The museum uses multiple skylights to allow natural light into the building, and Nansulate® was used to reduce heat transfer and glare.

Nansulate® was also used by Cornwell Quality Tools in a large energy efficiency upgrade at their Mogadore, Ohio manufacturing facility, reducing heat transfer through facility windows and helping reduce energy costs by $30,000 over a 4 month period.

Nansulate® Translucent GP can easily be applied with a brush, roller or sprayer and although Nansulate® is clear it will leave a slightly cloudy appearance on glass which you can view by clicking here.

Nansulate® can be used in countless ways all over your home or commercial building so call us and we will be happy to identify the areas in your home, building or facility where it can help you save money. 800-767-3998 or email contact@nansulate.com, or visit us at www.nansulate.com.
