Nansulate® Solar Insulation - for Solar Equipment Manufacturers
Nansulate® represents the next generation of effective, versatile insulation and is particularly well suited for solar energy systems. It is a clear, paintable insulation coating that has been shown to increase the efficiency of solar thermal panels and solar water heater systems.
The technology behind Nansulate® is a unique micro-sized material with nano-sized internal architecture that inhibits the transfer of heat, causing the material to act as an effective thin insulator with added featurs of moisture, mold and corrosion resistance.
Universal Energy Group is utilizing Nansulate® Solar on solar hot water heater and solar panel systems to increase heat retention and efficiency of the units. The Stiebel Eltron systems are certified OG300 and qualify for rebate programs in the states of California and Oregon.
Cost Effective Way to Increase Performance of Your Solar Products
Nansulate® Solar is a superior insulation that is also a low cost component which can easily be added into solar flat plate panels, water heater tanks and piping, and other components to reduce heat/energy loss and increase efficiency.
Example of Nansulate® Solar Incorporated into a Solar Water Heater System
Nansulate® Solar is used on the water heater tank and piping for insulation and to reduce surface temperature. The coating is also mold and corrosion resistant for added protection of your system. Recommended coverage is 3-5 coats (each coat applied at about 100 microns in thickness)

Where Else Can Nansulate® Solar Be Applied?
Because Nansulate® Solar is a clear coating, it can be applied to virtually any area of a solar light, solar panel, solar water heater, solar charger, solar PV or photovoltaic arrays - anywhere you wish to insulate and prevent the loss of heat/energy that has been collected from the sun. By insulating the casings, tubing, and other loss areas, you increase the efficiency of your solar array and decrease the cost per KWH.

Nansulate® Solar can be painted on solar charger cases, solar light collectors, solar PV (photovoltaic) arrays, solar water heaters, solar panels and solar piping to reduce heat/energy loss.

ISSUE: Edward Moore Design, Inc., a Canadian Government recognized research and development laboratory since 1985, was developing a cooling and heating system to be utilized in three unique medical devices. They needed the unit to be as energy efficient as possible and also use insulation which was acceptable for the hospital environment.
SOLUTION: Nansulate® GP was specified into the heating and cooling unit for the three new medical devices.
The first device is an air conditioned/heated massaging mattress cover, which can be used for bed ridden patients, controlling the temperature of the mattess, providing comfort and preventing bed sores. It is scheduled for clinical testing in November 2008 and offshoots of this technology are now destined to target the general consumer market.
Edward Moore, President, describes the projects further, “Nansulate has been specified into the main cooling and heating system for this design. Nansulate added to the mattress cover system was found to reduce cooling temperature at a rate of 1.8 degrees per minute, as compared to the foam insulation alone which reduced temperature at a rate of 1.1 degrees per minute. All test were performed under identical conditions cooling one gallon of fluid.
By speeding up the cooling process, substantial energy savings were achieved. In addition, Nansulate prevented sweating during the cooling process and also prevents growth of unwanted substances on the surface of the system.
The same carefully researched cooling and heating system specifying Nansulate will be incorporated into a new machine to form x-ray invisible casts with perfectly even pressure over the entire area of a broken limb. The casts can be worn while swimming or bathing and re-formed, again with perfectly even
pressure, when swelling reduces. Thanks to Nansulate the time to form a perfectly even pressure cast will be approximately three minutes.
An additional portable machine specifying Nansulate in the unique heating and cooling system, is to heat and or cool with adjustable massage any area of the body for sports medicine and general
physiotherapy needs. This machine will free up the doctor or technician to perform other tasks. The portability of the battery operated machine is due in large part to the energy savings realized with Nansulate insulating coatings.”

Case Study
APPLICATION:
Nansulate® Solar was applied to a solar hot water heater tank and piping. Surface temperature of pipes is over 200F. The pipes were coated with 12 coats of Nansulate® Solar to dramatically reduce surface temperature and, therefore, heat loss.
Nansulate® Solar and Nansulate HomeProtect Clear Coat were also used on the interior of the case for flat plate solar panels to increase efficiency and reduce energy loss.
RESULTS:
Surface temperature on pipes and tank were reduced from 200F to 80F indicating a dramatic reduction in heat and energy loss.
A recent customer states,
“I will tell you why Nansulate is so important for solar thermal installations. It is not only its great ability to insulate tanks and piping, but its overall ability to work in the new high tech solar thermal installations, where the new flat plate panels are combined with more expensive evacuated tube panels, which saves the customer money by lowering the overall cost of the system, but still boosts wintertime performance.
Evacuated tube panels are 60% to 70% efficient in cloudy winter weather, whereas flat plate panels are only 10% to 20% efficient. Since evacuated tube panels are better insulated and designed to hold their heat with the vacuum, the flat plate panels are detrimental to this process of retaining heat and unfortunately act as reflectors of this heat when it is needed to be retained for maximum heat transfer to take place.
By treating the flat plate panels with Nansulate we have improved the heat retention of the flat plate solar panels which allows the evacuated tube panels to transfer more of the heat they produce in cloudy weather to be utilized by the end user. Furthermore, they still can cool down the system and protect the evacuated tube panels if needed.
During a maximum heat exchange the treated flat plate panel was 169.5 degrees F, which was the same as the evacuated tube panels; the non treated flat plate panel was 123.8 F degrees. At night, after the panels cool down, they are the same temperature. However, it is three to four hours before the treated panel cools down to the same temperature as the untreated panel.
I am getting ready to have the media come to see my house and Nansulate will be one of the many items featured. If I did not have the Nansulate I wouldn’t have been able to heat my house since 1/1/08 till today (11/24/08) without using natural gas or wood pellets. I have included some pictures and your product is in every one of them. Thanks for a great product, patience, and your support.”

Product Details - Nansulate® Solar
Temperature Extremes: From -40F to 400F (-40C to 204C)
Application Temperature Range: 40F to 212F (4C to 100C)
Coverage Rate: One gallon covers approximately 150-175 sq ft of surface area with the recommended minimum three coats of Nansulate® required for thermal protection. Actual coverage rate may vary depending on surface texture.
Thermal conductivity, k, is the intensive property of a material that indicates its ability to conduct heat. The lower the thermal conductivity number, the better the insulator. The low thermal conductivity of Nansulate® and the nanomaterial (Hydro-NM-Oxide - 0.017 W/mK) contained in Nansulate® is what makes it an excellent insulator. Nansulate® coatings when fully cured consist of over 70% by volume of Hydro-NM-Oxide.
