Nansulate® Solar is the next generation of effective, versatile insulation and is particularly well suited for solar energy systems. It is a clear, paintable nanotechnology based product designed to enhance the effectiveness of solar hot water heaters, solar collectors, heat exchangers, pipes, tanks and other components. Nansulate® also protects surfaces from corrosion and is mold and moisture resistant.

The technology behind Nansulate® is a unique micro-sized material with nano-sized internal architecture that inhibits the transfer of heat, causing the material to act as an effective thin insulator with added featurs of moisture, mold and corrosion resistance.

The opportunities for improving performance of a Solar Power Plants by reducing heat/energy loss include:

  • Solar Collectors - both flat plate and evacuated tube panels can increse heat retention during daylight and night time phases
  • Solar water heaters & piping can be coated to reduce heat loss and decrease energy used to maintain water temperature

Energy Saving & Heat Reduction Examples

Temperature Difference Data from Bandvulc Tyres on Heat Exchanger Plate

Nansulate was applied to the exterior of a heat exchanger plate. The first coat was applied thinly and left to set for just over 20 days. After this period, the coats were applied more liberally up until the 8th coat. The 8th coat result showed a temperature difference of roughly 30 degrees C before full cure time completed. After full cure a larger temperature difference is expected.

Energy Savings Data from Textile Application on Heat Exchanger

Heat Exchanger Insulation

Nansulate® was applied to all heat exchangers of the customer's dyeing machines. After monitoring closely their consumption of LNG (liquified natural gas) for a period of 5 months, it was shown that they experienced an energy savings of more than 20%.

Product Details - Nansulate® Solar

Temperature Extremes: From -40F to 400F (-40C to 204C)
Application Temperature Range: 40F to 212F (4C to 100C)

Coverage Rate: One gallon covers approximately 150-175 sq ft of surface area with the recommended minimum three coats of Nansulate® required for thermal protection. Actual coverage rate may vary depending on surface texture.

Thermal conductivity, k, is the intensive property of a material that indicates its ability to conduct heat. The lower the thermal conductivity number, the better the insulator. The low thermal conductivity of Nansulate® and the nanomaterial (Hydro-NM-Oxide - 0.017 W/mK) contained in Nansulate® is what makes it an excellent insulator. Nansulate® coatings when fully cured consist of over 70% by volume of Hydro-NM-Oxide.
